SCR's A Christmas Carol—A Family Affair
36th Annual Production Includes 16 Theatre Conservatory Students
COSTA MESA, Calif., Nov. 11, 2015. During their first week of rehearsal, 16 students in SCR’s Theatre Conservatory—who portray the children in South Coast Repertory’s 36th annual production of A Christmas Carol—gathered for group photographs. Adhering to a time-honored tradition, everyone donned Christmas scarves for the occasion.
Director John-David Keller—in his seasonal scarf, as always—welcomed the young actors, who were chosen through auditions open to all third-year students and above, as well as second-year students recommended by their instructors. (The role of Tiny Tim is cast separately, and first-year students are eligible to audition.)
The sixteen actors are divided into red and green teams. After the second week of rehearsals, and during the run of the show, they will perform with their teams on alternate days. This allows them time to share the holidays at home with their families as well as onstage with the SCR family, which includes Hal Landon Jr., SCR’s one and only Scrooge.
According to Keller, “Our adult actors and the show’s other artists are a very special group. Most of them are veterans of numerous productions; however, thirteen of the youngsters are newcomers to the show, and it’s great fun to see the joyful fresh faces and welcome them to our cast of professionals.”
The young actors include Rachel Bailey/Rachel Charny (Martha Cratchit), Carissa Diller/Aoife McEvoy (Belinda Cratchit), Sean Kato/Louis Alvarez Tonkavich (Peter Cratchit), Jack Matthews/Catherine Mitchell (Tiny Tim), Jamie Ostmann/Lauren Lyons (Fan/Teen Girl), Kiana Kamm/Kennedy Haynes (Girl About Town), J.T. Casey/Nicholas Trafton (Young Ebenezer/Oliver Shelley), Hudson Mattingly Stefanello/Colin Root (Turkey Boy).
