Going to a Place where you Already Are Opens at SCR, Underwritten by Two of the Theatre's Most Magnanimous Couples
COSTA MESA, Calif. (March 14, 2016) - Bekah Brunstetter’s Going to a Place where you Already Are had its world premiere on South Coast Repertory’s Julianne Argyros Stage tonight, directed by Artistic Director Marc Masterson and underwritten by Yvonne and Damien Jordan & Dr. SL and Betty Huang/Huang Family Foundation.
After acknowledging Masterson and Founding Artistic Directors David Emmes and Martin Benson in her curtain speech, Board President Sophie Cripe thanked the underwriters.
“These are four people who have been among SCR’s strongest supporters,” she said. “And not just as Honorary Producers, but as board members (Damien is a past board president, both Betty and SL served on the board, and Betty is an emeritus trustee) and Gala supporters (Yvonne was vice chair of the 50th Season Gala, “Theatrical Gold,” and Betty chaired “Affair in Shanghai”).
“As for their underwriting, the Jordans have served as Honorary Producers of the Pacific Playwrights Festival since 2009, and between them, the Huangs and Jordans have helped underwrite 11 plays, including sharing the honors for David Henry Hwang’s Chinglish—and traveling to the Hong Kong Arts Festival to see the production. Now that’s support,” Sophie concluded, urging playgoers to read more about the couples in the program.
Managing Director Paula Tomei added that having generous underwriters is particularly important for new plays. “Bekah’s play is an SCR commission, and we believed in it from the outset. We’re grateful that we have the luxury of working with writers like Bekah to workshop and develop new plays over time, thanks in part to our Honorary Producers. We think you’ll be pleased with one of the results of that process, which is tonight’s warm and funny play.”
She then invited everyone to the Cast Party, co-hosted by The Westin South Coast Plaza in the newly refurbished Catalina Room (formerly Pinot Provence).
Among the First Night subscribers and guests were Karen & Bruce Clark, Bill & Carolyn Klein, Mary Ann Brown & Rick Reiff, Teri Kennady & Eric Hyman, Mayor Bao Nguyen (City of Garden Grove), Talya Nevo-Hacohen & Bill Schenker, Robert & Julie Davey, David & Susan Dull, Lynne & Howard Lang, Paul & Penny McManigal.
