Future Thinking Opens on SCR's Segerstrom Stage, Underwritten by the Playwrights Circle
COSTA MESA, Calif. (April 1, 2016) - Eliza Clark’s Future Thinking opened tonight on the Segerstrom Stage at South Coast Repertory, directed by Lila Neugebauer and underwritten by The Playwrights Circle of individual theatre donors.
A runaway hit at the 2014 Pacific Playwrights Festival, Future Thinking is set at Comic Con and centers around the spoiled star of a science fiction TV series and her obsessed fan,
In his curtain speech, Artistic Director Marc Masterson talked about the relationships explored in Future Thinking and what happens when reality and fantasy collide. He remarked that SCR has been reading Clark’s work since she was a student at Yale. “We knew early-on that she had a great sense of humor and wrote with a unique voice about issues that matter today. Future Thinking is her most unique work to date.”
Joining Masterson onstage, Board President Sophie Cripe acknowledged SCR’s Founding Artistic Directors David Emmes and Martin Benson and thanked members of the Playwrights Circle, an adventurous group of donors who underwrite a world premiere each spring. “When they join Playwrights Circle, they often don’t even know what the play will be,” Cripe said. “That’s what I call loyalty. Many are members of long standing; others are new to Playwrights Circle—but they’re all Friends of SCR. We thank them for their continuing support.”
The underwriters are Susan Bowman and Freddie Greenfield, Mary Ann Brown and Rick Reiff, Dr. Robert F. and Julie A. Davey, Mr. Brian Drake and Dr. Diane A.
