The Tempest Opens On South Coast Repertory’s Segerstrom Stage
First Production of 51st Season Underwritten by Jean and Tim Weiss & Joan and Andy Fimiano
COSTA MESA, CA, September 5, 2014. South Coast Repertory’s 51st Season opened with a transformative version of Shakespeare’s The Tempest—replete with music and magic—generously underwritten by two couples who are major suppporters of SCR, Jean and Tim Weiss & Joan and Andy Fimiano.
In his curtain speech, Artistic Director Marc Masterson talked about his longtime friend and collaborator, Aaron Posner, who conceived and directed The Tempest with Teller (of Penn and Teller fame). “When I heard about Aaron’s plans for this production, I stepped up immediately to join the consortium of theatres. When you see the result, I’m sure you’ll echo the enthusiasm all of us here at SCR share for the show.”
Joining Masterson onstage, Board President Sophie Cripe introduced SCR’s Founding Artistic Directors David Emmes and Martin Benson and thanked the underwriters, whose generosity made all the magic possible. “This is Joan and Andy’s third time as Honorary Producers, and we welcome their continued support. Jean and Tim have underwritten 16 productions—one every season since Tim joined the Board. They were unable to be here tonight, but they attended a reading of the play (one of our Honorary Producer perks!) and will see the show when they return. Please read all about these two dynamic couples in your program.”
Managing Director Paula Tomei thanked Corporate Associate Producer US Bank (represented by Joe Hensley, market president for Orange County) a loyal sponsor over the years, having helped underwrite nine productions. She also thanked Media Partner 89.3 KPCC, represented by Carol Komatsuka, vice president of development.
Adding her thoughts about the first play of the 2014-15 Season, Tomei said, “I’m thrilled to be up here tonight, standing on the set for this amazing production of The Tempest. It has been a joy to work with these artists during the past few weeks. I hope you’ll join us for our Cast Party on Ela’s Terrace after the show, when you can meet them all. Believe me, some of them will look quite different off stage!”
Among the First Night subscribers and their guests were: Donald and Sue Hecht, Betty and S.L. Huang, Nancy and Alberto Manetta, Sarah and Thom McElroy, Beth and Tom Phelps, Katie and Jim Loss, Yumiko and Robert Baxt, Linda and Steve Clark, Genet and Manual Gomez, Judy and Joel Slutzky, Marci Maietta Weinberg and Bill Weinberg and Ray Weston.
