Press Release - Tokyo Fish Story Opens

tokyo fish story Opens at South Coast Repertory Underwritten by Bill and Carolyn Klein & Samuel and Tammy Tang

COSTA MESA, CA, March 13, 2015.  South Coast Repertory Board President Sophie Cripe welcomed an enthusiastic audience of SCR supporters to the world premiere of tokyo fish story by Kimber Lee, directed by Bart DeLorenzo and underwritten by Bill and Carolyn Klein & Samuel and Tammy Tang.

After acknowledging Founding Artistic Directors David Emmes and Martin Benson, Cripe introduced Artistic Director Marc Masterson and Managing Director Paula Tomei.

“Playwright Kimber Lee is having a great year,” Masterson told First Nighters, “with work that has premiered from the West Coast to New York’s Lincoln Center Theatre and with outstanding commisions from several theatres— including South Coast Repertory!  We look forward to another play from Kimber in the future.  But tonight we’re here for tokyo fish story, a lovely new play about the art of sushi—and, as you’ll soon see, so much more.”

Cripe added that bringing Kimber’s new play to life in the best possible production was aided by four unique people.  “I’d like to tell you about two of them, longtime Friends of SCR,  Bill and Carolyn Klein.  The Kleins have been donors and subscribers since the early 1990s and have supported SCR’s work in many ways—as members of the Playwrights Circle, underwriters of the Pacific Playwright Festival and Individual Honorary Producers for the second time.”

Tomei acknowledged the other couple, Samuel and Tammy Tang.  “We’re happy to welcome the Tangs as first-time underwriters.  Samuel was elected to the SCR Board of Trustees this season, and they’re First Night subscribers, so I’m sure you’ll be seeing more of Samuel and Tammy in the future.  Meanwhile, please read about both couples in your program.”

Then, she invited everyone to the Cast Party, co-sponsored by Scott’s Restaurant and Bar.

Among the First Night subscribers and their guests were:  John & Mary Carrington, David & Jo Jo Chavez, Kerry English & Olga Garay-English, Scott & Mari Fassett, Teri Kennady & Eric Hyman, Deirdre Kelly & Howard Privette. R. Kelly Kelly & Kay Mortenson and Mike & Nancy Meyer.
