Press Release - The Whipping Man Underwriting

The Whipping Man Opens at South Coast Repertory Underwritten by Barbara Roberts and Brooke Roberts-Webb & Mary Beth Adderley

COSTA MESA, CA, January 9, 2015.  South Coast Repertory Board President Sophia Cripe welcomed an enthusiastic audience of SCR supporters to First Night of The Whipping Man by Matthew Lopez, directed by Founding Artistic Director Martin Benson and generously underwritten by Barbara Roberts and Brooke Roberts-Webb and Mary Beth Adderley.

After acknowledging Benson and his colleague, Founding Artistic Director David Emmes, she introduced Artistic Director Marc Masterson and Managing Director Paula Tomei.

Masterson reminded First Nighters, “This compelling play by the young writer Matthew Lopez has taken New York—and the rest of the theatre world—by storm.  In fact, after it completes this run, our production will move on to the Pasadena Playhouse.  Please join me in welcoming Playhouse Artistic Director Sheldon Epps, who is with us tonight.

The Whipping Man takes place in the South immediately after the Civil War.  That’s not an unfamiliar setting, but much about the play will surprise you, and everything about it will move you, especially as staged by Martin and his excellent designers—a team that wouldn’t be possible without strong underwriting from our friends.”

In acknowledging the underwriters, Tomei enumerated the many plays they have helped producer.  Roberts, with her late husband Bill and, more recently, her daughter Brooke, has underwritten eleven in all.  Adderley has helped produce ten, the last eight directed by Benson.

“But that’s only part of the support by these extraordinary theatre-lovers,” Tomei added, encouraging First Nighters to read all about them in the program.  “You’ll find some interesting facts, among them that Barbara is a former board member, who chaired the “Roman Affair” Gala, and Mary Beth is a former SCR actor!”

Tomei informed the audience that the underwriters were unable to attend First Night, “But joining us are two other avid theatre-goers and SCR supporters.  Please welcome Julianne and George Argyros.”

Cripe thanked Media Partner OC Jewish Life, represented by Mody and Tracey Gorsky and Susan and Marty Stein, and invited everyone to the Cast Party, co-hosted by Antonello Ristorante in South Coast Village.

Among the First Night subscribers and their guests were:  Veronica Gray & Robert Daily,  John & Sue Murphy, Dean & Esther Zipser, Susan & Sam Anderson , Linda & Bob Hovee, Deborah Sassoon & Daniel Gil and Talya Nevo-Hacohen & Bill Schenker.
