South Coast Repertory explores an important time in California history with the revival of a tale that captured the imaginations of school children and educators and became one of the most popular Educational Touring Productions.

Based on the true story of Thomas Jefferson Mayfield, who spent his formative years with the Choinumne (chu-wan’na-me) tribe, Indian Summer illuminates the relationship between early settlers and Native Americans while providing a direct link to elementary school curriculum

As Tom is introduced to people different from himself, young audiences will learn along with him. Like Tom, they’ll come to appreciate the relationship between people and the land that nourishes them, to understand traditional beliefs and values and to share in the wonders of nature. This bright and lively musical highlights an important time in California history as it teaches a valuable lesson in ethnic diversity.

Directly supports the California State Frameworks for History-Social Science,
English-Language Arts and Visual and Performing Arts

Dear Educators and Parents:
There is a buzz in the air, attendance is up, tardies are down and the daily bulletin says “SPECIAL PROGRAM TODAY.”  For more than 40 years, SCR’s Educational Touring Productions have enriched the lives of students and created SPECIAL DAYS at school. SCR brings a valuable standards-based educational program to the schoolhouse door that provides an exhilarating arts experience for students and teachers. The content of these original curriculum-based productions is always timely, developmentally appropriate and electric with enthusiasm.

This year, the revival of SCR’s popular hit Indian Summer explores a special time in California history and links directly to the Elementary History-Social Science curriculum. Students will enjoy a musical lesson in ethnic diversity as they learn about the traditional beliefs and values of the Native Americans who played such an important role in the state’s early history. All students should see this unique, compelling production which will light their creative fires and capture their imaginations.

Teachers all over Southern California can use this experience to motivate and inspire learning. This amazing production adds a new and exciting dimension to literacy education. I urge you to book a performance of Indian Summer for your school today. Make sure your students enjoy a SPECIAL DAY in spring 2009.
